What is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth. It is caused by the buildup of bacteria in plaque, which triggers an inflammatory response that can eventually lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Symptoms of periodontitis include swollen, tender or bleeding gums, receding gums, bad breath, and loose teeth. Treatment usually involves a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing, antibiotics, and in severe cases, surgery. It is important to practice good oral hygiene to prevent this from occurring.
If you have been diagnosed with periodontitis, then treatment will usually begin with non-surgical periodontal therapy. This patient came in with sore bleeding gums as well as bad breath. Following treatment, the gums have stopped bleeding and the bad breath has been eliminated. Another healthy and happy patient!
