Dental implants can be an effective way to replace missing teeth, but the success of implant treatment depends on more than the implant itself.

The health of the gums and supporting bone matters before treatment begins, during healing and long after the final restoration has been fitted.

For patients considering implants, one of the most important questions is therefore not simply, “Am I suitable for an implant?” It is also, “Are my gums healthy enough to support one?”

Why gum health matters before dental implants

A dental implant is placed into the jawbone and acts as an artificial tooth root. Once placed, the surrounding bone needs to integrate with the implant so that it becomes stable enough to support a crown, bridge or denture.

That process depends on a healthy oral environment.

If active gum disease is present, inflammation and bacterial plaque can affect the tissues that will ultimately support the implant. Periodontitis can also cause loss of the bone around natural teeth, which may influence the amount and quality of bone available for implant treatment.

Does bone loss from gum disease affect dental implants?

It can.

Periodontitis damages the tissues that support the teeth, including the jawbone. If significant bone has been lost, there may be less bone available for implant placement.

That does not automatically rule out implant treatment.

In some situations, additional procedures may be considered to rebuild or preserve bone before or alongside implant treatment. In others, the implant position, number of implants or overall restorative plan may need to change.

  • bleeding and inflammation
